Bangalore, April 17, 2025 — The Archdiocese of Bangalore marked Maundy Thursday with deep reverence and solemnity at the historic St. Francis Xavier’s Cathedral. The liturgy, which commemorates Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples and the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood, was celebrated in three languages, drawing hundreds of faithful from across the city.

The Kannada Mass was celebrated by His Grace, Archbishop Peter Machado, and in the homily by Rev. Fr. Cyril Victor Joseph reflected on the heart of Christian service. “In washing the feet of His disciples, Jesus taught us that true greatness lies in humble service to others,” encouraging the faithful to imitate Christ’s humility and love in their own lives.

A powerful moment during the liturgy came when Archbishop Machado knelt to wash the feet of twelve parishioners, symbolizing the act of Jesus at the Last Supper. This gesture was not just ceremonial but a profound call to each member of the Church to be at the service of others—especially the marginalized, the suffering, and the forgotten. His act deeply moved the congregation and served as a living homily of humility.

The Tamil Mass was presided over by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Susainathan, who echoed the theme of selfless service. “Christ's love calls us to go beyond comfort zones to serve the least among us,” he shared, urging the faithful to serve the poor and vulnerable.

The English Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Amarnath, the Cathedral Dean, who reminded the faithful, “Tonight, Christ entrusts us with the legacy of love, humility, and sacrifice. Let us carry it with courage.”

The entire liturgical celebration and arrangements were meticulously coordinated under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Arokya Swamy D, Rector and Parish Priest of the Cathedral. His leadership ensured a spiritually enriching experience for all participants, with the foot-washing ritual carried out during each Mass as a symbol of Christ’s commandment to love one another.
As the Church enters the sacred days of Good Friday and Easter, let us offer prayers for all priests—our spiritual shepherds—whose tireless service keeps the flame of faith alive. May this Maundy Thursday renew in each of us a heart ready to serve and love like Christ.
