Raising the Flag, Lifting Spirits: Celebrating Faith at St. Mary’s Basilica

A profound spirit of devotion filled the air at St. Mary’s Basilica, Bangalore, as thousands gathered for the annual flag hoisting ceremony. The event was graced by Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado, Auxiliary Bishops Most Rev. Arokiaraj Satis Kumar and Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Susainathan, along with Shri Rizwan Arshad, MLA.

The ceremony began with a warm welcome for the guests, followed by a Gospel reading that set a contemplative tone. The bishops delivered heartfelt messages, with Archbishop Machado emphasizing the "manifold blessings God has bestowed upon us and our Archdiocese." He further reminded the faithful that "in these challenging times, our faith in God and unity with each other will be our greatest strength."

He also spoke passionately about the importance of interreligious unity, stating, "To achieve peace and harmony in our society, we must respect and understand one another, regardless of our religious differences. It is through such unity that we will build a future of peace."

Bishop Arokiaraj Satis Kumar spoke of Mary as "the Mother of us all," highlighting how "her faith and humility are a model for us to live the Christian life." He encouraged the congregation to follow Mary's example, saying, "By embracing her virtues, we can find the strength to love and serve one another."

Bishop Joseph Susainathan reflected on Mary's sacred role, describing her as "the temple of God, who kept it holy for the salvation of the world." He reminded everyone, "Just as Mary was a dwelling place for God's presence, we too are called to be temples of God, living holy lives that reflect His love and grace."

Following the inspiring words of the bishops, the atmosphere shifted to one of solemn devotion as the Benediction took place. This sacred moment allowed the faithful to receive blessings and grace, preparing their hearts for the highlight of the ceremony—the hoisting of the flag.

As the flag of St. Mary's Basilica was raised high, a wave of spiritual joy swept over the crowd. The sight of the flag flying against the clear sky was a powerful symbol of faith and hope, uniting everyone in a shared sense of purpose and community.
