Strengthening Marriages, Strengthening the Church: Young Clergy Formation 2025

Writer: BangaloreArchdioceseBangaloreArchdiocese

The Archdiocese of Bangalore organized an ongoing formation program for its young clergy from March 17-19, 2025, at FISI, Bangalore, with a central focus on Marriage Ministry. The event was graced by Archbishop Peter Machado and the Auxiliary Bishops, Rt. Rev.  Arokiaraj Satis Kumar and Rt. Rev. Joseph Susainathan, who offered their guidance and support to the young priests. The program aimed to equip the clergy with deeper insights into marriage-related pastoral challenges and strengthen their role in supporting couples and families in the Church.

The formation sessions were designed to address various modern challenges associated with marriage and family life. Fr. Merlin Ambrose led discussions on Sexual Misconduct in Canon Law and shared insights on the Final Document of the Synod and Synodality, emphasizing the importance of synodality in building inclusive communities. Fr. Arnald Mahesh presented on the sensitive topic of LGBTQ+ Issues and Marriage, providing guidance on how to approach these matters pastorally. Bishop Joseph Susainathan delivered a session on The Role of the Church in Strengthening Marriages, highlighting the Church’s responsibility in fostering healthy and faith-filled relationships.

Fr. Arockia Swamy Sebastian led an insightful session on Marriage Cases, focusing on how priests can assist couples facing difficulties within their marriages, particularly in legal and canonical aspects. He also facilitated group discussions, allowing young clergy to share their experiences and pastoral approaches to handling marriage-related challenges.

A significant highlight of the formation was the emphasis on interfaith and international marriages, addressed by Bishop Arokiaraj Satis Kumar. His session provided valuable perspectives on how priests can guide couples navigating cultural and religious differences in their marital journey while staying rooted in their faith.

On March 19, 2025, the program concluded with a celebration of the Solemnity of St. Joseph, the patron of the Universal Church and protector of families. On this day, the young clergy extended heartfelt wishes to Bishop Joseph Susainathan in honor of his feast day, acknowledging his commitment to supporting the clergy in their pastoral duties.

This three-day formation not only deepened the theological and pastoral understanding of the young priests but also fostered a renewed commitment to the vital ministry of marriage. As the clergy left the program, they were empowered to better accompany couples in their journeys of faith and family life, ensuring the continued strength of the marriage ministry within the Archdiocese.
